Enhancing English Language and Study Skills among Underprivileged Secondary School Students

Project Location: Selected government secondary schools in rural and semi-urban areas of Sri Lanka

Target Group / Beneficiaries: Secondary school students (Grades 9–11) from under-resourced schools - Approximately 150–200 students in the first phase

Background and Rationale: Lanka Foundation for Social and Educational Research (LFSER)English language proficiency and effective study skills are critical determinants of academic success and future employability in Sri Lanka. However, students in underprivileged and rural contexts often lack access to structured language support and learner-centered skill development. This project aims to address educational inequities by providing systematic English language enhancement and study skills training grounded in research-based pedagogical practices.


Objectives:

  • To improve students’ basic English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • To develop essential study skills such as note-taking, time management, and examination strategies.
  • To increase learners’ academic confidence and motivation toward continued education.


Key Activities:

  • Needs analysis and baseline assessment of students’ English proficiency
  • Weekly interactive English language workshops conducted by trained facilitators
  • Study skills training sessions integrated with school curriculum requirements
  • Development and distribution of supplementary learning materials
  • Mid-project monitoring and final evaluation of learning outcomes


Expected Outcomes:

  • Measurable improvement in students’ English language proficiency
  • Enhanced independent learning and study habits
  • Increased student engagement and academic participation

Sustainability: LFSER will maintain an online professional learning community to support ongoing teacher development beyond the project lifecycle.

  • Online platform, digital tools, and technical support: 150,000.
  • Workshop materials and documentation: 120,000.
  • Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting: 130,000.
  • Administrative and coordination costs: 100,000.
  • Total Estimated Budget: LKR 8,000,00.


Proposed Funding Sources: The project will be funded through voluntary donations, local educational grants, membership contributions, and philanthropic support mobilized by the Lanka Foundation for Social and Educational Research (LFSER)
