Capacity Building for English Language Teachers through Professional Development


Project Title: Strengthening English Language Teaching Capacity in Sri Lankan Schools

Implementing Organization: Lanka Foundation for Social and Educational Research (LFSER)

Project Duration: 9 months

Proposed Start Date: Within six months of NGO registration approval

Project Location: Hybrid mode (online via Zoom and selected in-person workshops)

Target Group / Beneficiaries: English language teachers from government and private schools - Approximately 60–80 teachers in the initial phase

Background and Rationale: Continuous professional development is essential for English language teachers to respond effectively to evolving curricular demands and learner needs. Many teachers, particularly in non-urban areas, have limited access to updated pedagogical training. This project seeks to strengthen instructional quality through structured, research-informed professional development.


Objectives:

  • To enhance teachers’ pedagogical knowledge of communicative and learner-centered methodologies
  • To improve classroom practices related to assessment, feedback, and learner engagement.
  • To promote reflective teaching and professional collaboration.


Key Activities:

  • Online professional development workshops on contemporary ELT methodologies
  • Practical training on material development and classroom assessment
  • Peer discussion forums and reflective practice sessions
  • Classroom-based action research guidance
  • Final professional sharing seminar


Expected Outcomes:

  • Improved instructional practices among participating teachers
  • Increased teacher confidence in implementing communicative approaches
  • Creation of a professional support network facilitated by LFSER

Sustainability: LFSER will maintain an online professional learning community to support ongoing teacher development beyond the project lifecycle.

  • Online Platform and Technical Support : 150,000
  • Training Materials and Documentation : 120,000
  • Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting: 100,000
  • Administrative and coordination costs: 60,000
  • Total Estimated Budget: LKR 8,000,00


Proposed Funding Sources: Funding for this project will be secured through voluntary donations, professional development grants, membership contributions, and collaborative partnerships with educational institutions and well-wishers facilitated by LFSER.
